This site, which preserves the remains of an ancient Roman city, represents one of the most fascinating testimonies to the culture of Irpinia and the grandeur of the Roman Empire. An excursion to Aeclanum is the perfect opportunity to enrich your experience at the resort with a plunge into history, combining the pleasure of wellness with that of discovery..
At the heart of ancient Irpinia
An undiscovered archaeological treasure
Aeclanum, founded by the Samnite tribe of the Irpini and subsequently Romanised, was an important commercial and cultural centre. Situated along the Via Appia, the ‘Regina Viarum’, it still preserves the remains of the bridge known as the ‘broken bridge’ and numerous finds from the imperial era. Prominent among the ruins are the public baths, the macellum (covered market), several domus, shops and the imposing walls about 10 metres high, interrupted by towers and gates.
Of particular interest is the early Christian basilica, dating from the Justinian period, which preserves traces of an immersion baptismal font. A walk in the 18-hectare Archaeological Park of Aeclanum allows visitors to discover the daily life of the ancient Roman city, immersing themselves in a past that continues to tell the millennial story of Irpinia.
